These examples are excerpted from one exercise from the 2-D Illustration course offered through the illustration department at The Academy of Art University. Students painted self-portraits depicting aspects of their "shadow" personality (e.g. hypocrite, pedant, gossip, glutton, seductress, hero, victim, miser, passive, aggressor etc). They began by physically performing their "shadow" through facial expressions, postures and gestures which would later be used as a basis for their paintings. Students were encouraged to use metaphor, color, environmental and scenic elements to further clarify the narrative of the "shadow."
